Mob farms

Aconan, Tue Nov 18 2014, 01:46PM

We all know how intensive they can be, especially at spawn. Now we have several options, remove them entirely, put them far out, or put them in the Nether.

If all mobs farms were in the nether, it would make the over-world a far nice place for toasters.

Thoughts?

i already have a minimal slimefarm at my house at spawn. Minimal because its spawnrate is very slow since i can't mob proof all the chunks around it at spawn area. So it definitly shouldn't cause any problems.

Personally i would go with the far out option since not all mobs can spawn in the Nether.

For spawning farms, at least. Farm animal farms (cows, sheep and such) would perfectly work in the Nether and easy access for all. So maybe even better having them in the Nether for all to use instead of everyone building his/her own one.

The only problem there is the nether rules. Nothing to stop anyone going "oh, nice work. *Hulk smash*" Those rules will never change. To be fair, at least further out means that the chunk is only loaded when the player is around.

On a side note, if we find any chunkloading machines (if there still are any) at a mobfarm. We wont be pleased...

unrelated to topic: just noticed all animals near spawn area got killed. i perfectly understand such action is neccessary in case of server problems to find the reason of the lag/outage.
But may i ask for a sign if a mod has had to take action? Not everyone reads the forums before getting into rage or something. I did, understand why/what happened, all fine. But not everyone will react like that

This topic was discussed a few years ago aswel, going off memory: building any sort of mob trap, no matter the size, in a highly populated area will always be active and thus always put streign on the server. So basically, mob traps are preffered to be in an area with a very low (even 0) population to preserve server resources (it only being active if there are people there).

Building any of these things in spawn would, for that reason, not be a good idea. I remember Blinky's preffered area used to be out in the middle of an ocean, which was pretty effective.

From what I understand, every entity in loaded chunks had to be removed all at once. It would have taken a lot of signs. I myself lost several good horses, all my maps, item frames etc.

I could of still placed a sign after the removal of mobs.

A sign was not placed as it honestly wasn't though of. Though if you do know where to look you would fine out what happened.

We could look to do a news post in future. I just looked to get the server back up as soon as possible (find the chunks causing the issue, and clear all entities within them due to a mobspawner that was out of control)

We usually don't refund items in these cases, Sybrio. Broonie had to clear those areas of all entities to ensure the server was accessible, nothing anyone can do about that aside from manage their mob farms properly.

Just take one of mines Sybrio or breed them. They are still there surprisingly, maybe one lucky chunk further out from spawn. Same offer goes for Discharge and anyone else that might have lost horses.

So what happened, am i missing something... There was crap ton of lag, so all mobs/animals were wiped? If so, I guess that's a downside to settling at spawn in a nice cluster of people frown

Just to clarify things - it's not a good idea to build any large spawning systems or breed lots of animals near to Spawn. For modified servers, it's also not a good idea to build large and complex machines near Spawn and leave them running while you are away. It all adds up to a lot of lag at Spawn and makes all members around the area suffer.

Therefore if you want such things - please do them away from Spawn. However, please do not build huge spawners anywhere on the map. We have seen one so far that got out of control to the point it crashed the server anytime anyone went near, requiring the recent "reset" of the area near Spawn, making people lose Mobs (friend or foe) in order to make the area accessible.

So please build / spawn / breed responsibly wink
