disconnected every few minutes or less..

AlexKockica, Tue Jan 28 2014, 01:56PM

Since yesterday I keep getting disconnected, sometimes every 30 seconds, sometimes in a few minutes and I get this warning:
"internal exception: io.netty.handler.timeout.ReadTimeoutException"
I have googled it and in many posts it says that the owner of the server must restart it in order for this to get fixed.. But then I know that our server gets restarted every day and it's still not working good..
Does anyone have this problem? Or have a solution for it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! It's almost unplayable at this point..

edit: Sorry I think I might have put this post in wrong section.. Please move it an appropriate one..

Alex plays on the Vanilla Refresh server the most Boss wink

Vanilla, Also last night it gave him the message "Server down for maintenance" however myself and others were still online playing. No restart or anything at the time.

boriseng, Wed Jan 29 2014, 08:49AM

FWIW it might be worth running a network tool like pingplotter and checking for excessive packet loss. It can happen, and I think it manifests as timeout errors.

AlexKockica, Wed Jan 29 2014, 03:46PM

Ok so last night I played at my friends house where I still am and all works fine..also tried using my phone as hotspot, also fine.. So it has to be a problem with mu internet connection, but I know that webpages load correctly and it works, just have problem with Minecraft which is odd and started out of no where.. Anyone have an idea how to fix this? Or maybe how can I ask my providers to fix this problem when my internet is working?

Boriseng, Pingplotter is only for Windows, I'm playing on a Mac.. Also it's $25 :/
Could you tell me for what to search in google to find similar programs for Mac?

ps Thx Soul! cheesey

Also received these 2 errors:

Re: disconnected every few minutes or less..
boriseng, Wed Jan 29 2014, 09:43PM

Didn't think of that, there's a free version of pingplotter but it's probably windows only.

Search for something like "mac graphical traceroute", and I'm reluctant to suggest anything I haven't used myself. With any luck many of the 'nix net tools are also available for mac.

Thx,
Draze84 also said he'll help me next time I connect from home.. But I'll call my provider and say I don't have a steady flow of data.. That I get disconnected every 30 sec and ask if they can fix that..

Been doing a bit of reading online and it could be numerous things. You could have a problem with your ISP, which you won't see when loading web pages. Try some of the following when you are having connection problems...

1. Restart your modem / routers / access points on your network. Be sure to leave them off and unplugged for a minute before restarting them one at a time (modem first, then first connected router / access point, etc.)

2. Disable your virus checker and see if that has made any difference (it may be activly blocking a port on your home network that it is not blocking at your friends house).

3. If you have recently updated or installed any programs that do anything online, make sure they are not set to run on startup / uninstall them.

4. Uninstall Java completely (Click for Mac uninstall). Reboot your computer, and then re-install Java 7. I had a problem where vanilla minecraft ran fine, but I couldn't run anything like FTB, Tekkit, etc. I fixed it by completely removing Java and installing the developer version rather than the normal version (on my old PC - normal version works fine on this PC).

5. Place TNT on computer, ignite, claim off household insurance for a new one under "accidental damage" tongue

Hmm.. Love #5 cheesey
Thx for the info, gonna try when I get home smile First and second one i did.. Have to see if maybe bad FTB files I just installed do something with this.. And number 4.
Re: disconnected every few minutes or less..
AlexKockica, Fri Feb 07 2014, 02:12AM

Ok so I tried everything (changing IP to static, reinstall Java, set Java priority to high, connected with cable, disabled firewall and anti-virus software, updated all drivers etc.. ) and also my ISP swears my parameters are good.. They did order a connection check by their staff, but that will take a looong time probably..

But this thing I found suggests that there might be a problem on the server side towards me..
"Connect to the server with your client, and run in a single direction, as more and more chunks are loaded into ram, the server will continue to eat up RAM, when its ran out of RAM, the server is stopped. On the servers console you'll get a memory error (java.lang.OutOfMemoryError).

Any clients connected to the server will lose connection (Since the server has stopped). And their clients will display them the java connection lost error message. "Internal exception: java.net.SocketException: Software caused connection abort: recv failed"."

That is the error I get the most, that means error might be from server to me? But it's odd how only I have that problem :/

Anyone know more on this subject? Playing is painful like this.. I get disconnected all the time every few minutes sometimes a bit longer or shorter frown

ps This happens to me on both Vanilla and FTB Unleashed

boriseng, Mon Feb 10 2014, 10:39AM

Regarding the ISP/connection aspect I get the impression the server is in France? Now I've had some odd problems elsewhere with UK to France connections but they cleared up when the routing changed.

Whether the route change was due to several weeks of complaints in a public forum or just automatic maintenance I'll never know.

Can you get a tracerout/tracert dump and see where your connection actually goes? There should be a Mac version of tracert.

Server is in France, I think there is a post about that.

Below is a more informative trace using winmtr and this shows some packet loss at two routers just before hitting the server (the ones showing 100% are just ignoring ping), I too have been seeing a lot of unusual lag and the odd disconnect. I do believe there is a problem local to the server which should be looked into..

I did same as Spin and here are my results:

I see a 50% loss at one point.. that has to make some problems

Re: disconnected every few minutes or less..
boriseng, Wed Feb 12 2014, 09:15AM

I'm going to guess that either your router or ISP gateway respond in a slightly odd way which might explain the first couple of hops.

Result one should normally be your router, 192.168.0.1 would be a typical router IP. The routers I use generally return a name.

The next result is normally your ISP's gateway, I'd expect it to have a valid IP and name but I guess yours is returning your account name instead, odd.

Re: disconnected every few minutes or less..
SpinDreams, Sat Feb 15 2014, 09:37PM

Hi Mort, just doing a tracert is not so good, I would suggest running winmtr http://winmtr.net/ which does repeated pings to the route and so shows any intermittent packet loss that might be happening. I find that lag goes through the roof when there are more than a few people online and find a lot of packet loss at routers close to the server.
Re: disconnected every few minutes or less..
piggles, Sat Feb 15 2014, 10:04PM

I think mort was just showing the hops as a point of reference rather than showing if he has a problem.

different route but that same 1 hop with huge data loss!!
so there's my problem..
at decix.routers.ovh.net huge loss.. it went to 95%
and at my home it was around 50%

ps Also atm I can't even connect.. server is marked red.. I might try some other server, any one, just to see if i have same problem (talking about FTB)
Re: disconnected every few minutes or less..
BRooNiE, Sun Feb 16 2014, 12:31PM

If there is only loss at one point, then why is there no loss at the further points/last point, loss would continue for the rest of the graph if that was the case as it still has to go through that router smile

Reasons for packet being dropped at that point could relate to rate limiting for ICMP/pings, or the router discarding the request as it has to focus on real switching/routing. (e.g. pings are low priority)

There has been alot of protocol changes in the Minecraft client/server recently, so don't rule those out either. There would be a pattern for the rest of the graph if a router was dropping routed packets.

FTB is running an old version, are you sure have the exact requirements?

Vanilla may have as it's bugs too, as above.

AFAIK, the only issue that is known is Virgin Media does have problems with choosing an alternative route for it's connection to the server. All other ISP's seem to be fine though.

uh sry guys I don't know how I didn't see your replies earlier frown
I learned to live with my occasional dc-s cause I lost that last nerve I had left trying to fix the problem tongue

@BR00NiE I have all requirements for FTB and it works ok, just get disconnected same as Vanilla.. But I have been playing only FTB for some time now so I don't really know if I still have problems with Vanilla.. I'm hooked on FTB cheesey

@Boriseng I don't have 2 routers cascaded.. I only have 1 thats both router and wifi modem.. my friends home, from where I play from time to time, also has only 1 router..
