For real?
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
, Fri Sep 09 2011, 10:16PM
Yes, for real. Also, as usual, it's buggy as all hell. In my opinion, it seems like they decided to use the community for bug checking.
Re:
Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
, Fri Sep 09 2011, 10:18PM
Beat me to it!
This is the pre-release; Jeb leaked it deliberately.
I think it is a pre-release because 'they never release on a Friday' - there will be nobody around to tackle bugs over the weekend, but now we have a chance to find them.
I've been playing this for about an hour now, and wow. I think the way we work as a community will really change now - biomes are absolutely huge:
Forests: can go on for miles, and are made up of a certain type of tree (ie. evergreen forests, tall tree forests).
Oceans: They are absolutely huge. Ridiculously. Even with no view limit on, I couldn't see from one side of an ocean to the other. It would take a long time to get across one.
Rivers: Not seen any yet!
Mushrooms: Not seen any either.
Endermen: Aren't actually that rare at night, in this version at least. Rarer than other mobs, but not difficult to find. They are pretty strong too - as expected they only attack when you look at them then look away, but there is NO outrunning them, they can teleport THROUGH things (so no hiding in a building either) and teleport behind/to the side of you if you try and attack them!
Their one weakness: Water. It hurts them like fire does to other mobs.
NPC Villages: I was in creative mode when I found one, and couldn't see any people (Notch said there wouldn't be any). However I heard someone mention that there were in fact NPCs in the villages, so I don't know. No village boundaries that I can see.
I can't see villages being all that useful right now, but I can see them being used by newbs who have no idea what they can do in the game.
Swamp biomes are pretty cool.
The only issue I've had so far is that the first time I loaded it up, the game put me on a tiny desert island with one tree right in the middle of an ocean. I couldn't see any shore in any direction.
Edit: BLUE SPIDERS - 1 block wide, they can get everywhere!
Abandoned mines are also pretty cool

Sounds awesome, I'm gonna try it as soon as I can.

Best update ever? I think so.
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!

Still loads of buggy stuff around buildings you can't get into without flying.
All those floating mineshaft supports, a lot more floating dirt blocks and or small floating islands.
Lava under the sea (lights it up quite well).
Some pitch black areas from some dodgy lighting.
Fun factor... off the scale.. and I'm just running around like a lemon... *flying around :x

Bah, I'm not doing this until it's an official release (and Bukkit updates). Don't care for SSP at all. But daym, it does look good.
Re:
Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
, Sat Sep 10 2011, 10:58AM
i just had a play. the villages seem pointless to me. the farms in them are so vast you'll have bread coming from your ears
the new biome settings are nice, but there are alot of random floating mountains, reminds me alot of the early alpha
if only the requirement for food was also accompanied with the need for water too. i've been playing with a mod that does that, food and energy requiring you to sleep which adds alot more challenge to the survivalist in me.
i'm still looking forward to it but it doesn't seem all that ground breaking to me.
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
dubien, Sat Sep 10 2011, 12:40PM
If your food meter is full, you can't die from mobs. I may be wrong though.

Anyone know what the right click option is on swords? It looks like a defensive block, but haven't bothered trying on Survival.

It stops arrows that's for sure.

Iron railings will connect to blocks, unless they are stacked half-steps
Re:

And then, I get the feeling that mob spawn level is a little damn high.
Agreed!
Re:

the new biome structure is really good
Re:
Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
, Sat Sep 10 2011, 02:56PM
you know, flying aroun in Creative Mode, I'm actually looking forward to a new CFUK map more and more.
Everything seems to flow better and isn't just a random jumble. It gives me positive thoughts on how the new server will flow and link together. If people adhere to building "WITH" the landscape rather than mass excavation, i reckon it'll look more like a real life town
[EDIT] perhaps Broonie and the mod gang should consider a slightly more strict building code for a radius around the new spawn. perhaps requiring planning permission for builds over a certain size/height to keep the place looking tidy and easy for navigation.
Re:
Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
Aconan, Sat Sep 10 2011, 03:11PM
Talking about the new biome. If anyone wants a rough idea of the biome layout then it works like this.
You'll find large land masses surrounded by vast deep oceans. I have taken habitat on a "small" group of islands.
First image shows my locations and the second a comparison in size.
Re:
Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
, Sat Sep 10 2011, 03:19PM
Just a few screenies of the rivers.
what i love about one of these, is that the river separates two biomes perfectly
Also, the third picture shows the marbled lake floor. that marbling is a mixture of dirt, sand, and CLAY
there is now a crap ton of clay, YAY!

you must've got unlucky with your seed. Mine is the opposite, about 50/50 land to water ratio.
i'll post my seed if i can figure out how to find out what it is lol

very sweet update cant wait till official 1 though, oceans are epic and biomes are really cool
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!

one side note, has anyone noticed a lighting bug with the villages? you need to remove and replace the torches for the light to emit. weird.

ok, dont venture too far out guys, i just suffered a crash that corrupted that world
i'm glad i uploaded it to mediafire as i can restore it from that! lol

Press F3 to find your seed.
Also, click post reply, (blue one) and click choose file to add pictures to the thread.
It appears that villages show up on the map (as brown blobs). Swamp biomes can consist of shallow water with trees in them, the light blue to the top of the map shows a swamp biome.
It seems on my seed that I have large stretches of "Sea" biome separating the larger landmasses.
EDIT: It also seems that vines grow naturally wherever you place them. It also seems that they could easily cover a tall build if you are not careful. Grow like mushrooms, not at all one moment and then other moments they are everywhere.
edit2: Hrmm, seems my map is around 106mb in size..
Seed is "-705598900408309069"

Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
, Sat Sep 10 2011, 04:12PM
ok this will wind the people that like basements under their builds... there are huge ravine and tunnel structures at just 10 blocks beneath most of the surface at sea level. that sucks a bit and the ravines are so deep and cave structures to windey that spelunking will be a challenge! i hope this is toned down a bit for full release. more air blocks mean less resources. and alot of resources stuck on 30 high straight drop walls.
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
dubien, Sat Sep 10 2011, 04:13PM
How does animal breeding work? Is it in the pre- release yet?
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
, Sat Sep 10 2011, 04:18PM
not sure. i haven't tried feeding them anything. but will certainly try in a moment
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
Aconan, Sat Sep 10 2011, 04:25PM
Animal breeding isn't on for 1.8 If I recall. I believe it was postponed to 1.9, animal breeding will activate when animals become "fixed".

just a couple of map shots of my seed for comparison
I notice that there's no snow biome in sight. i may try to find one to see how large they are
Re:
Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
, Sat Sep 10 2011, 04:42PM
random mountain valley and trademark floating dirt
(still haven't found a snow biome yet)
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
Aconan, Sat Sep 10 2011, 05:02PM
I have not seen a single snow biome at all. Gone from 0,0 to -4000,4000 and no snow biomes.
Side note, build portal, equip bed, fly around blowing the nether up. Sooo much fun.
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
, Sat Sep 10 2011, 05:09PM
wonder if the snow will be triggered by weather.
i'm in Creative Mode so haven't seen any weather affects at all.
Re:
Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
Aconan, Sat Sep 10 2011, 05:18PM
Creative mode has weather, well rain. Had a thunderstorm which wiped out small parts of my forest.
Anyway. What I have seen is that there seems to be a large landmass with rivers and lakes, and then there is a large ocean biome which encompasses it, before forming new landmass and areas.
My first map showed the islands, and this shows my spawn. So we could expect that if this is a trend with other maps (I had to go out 3K blocks) that this could prove a barrier for expansion.
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
, Sat Sep 10 2011, 05:21PM
hmmm nether portals seem to transport you 5X the nether distance now.

Mulan
i'll test that theory on my seed too
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
, Sat Sep 10 2011, 05:27PM
i'm getting frequent areas of mountainous terrain. what about you?
i think the combined lack of land, with a lack of resources from all the underground air space being so close to the surface and mountanous regions will make a new map very difficult.
as it stands right now, i'd suggest broonie hold fire on the update. That is unless Notch addresses these issues
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
Aconan, Sat Sep 10 2011, 05:30PM
It makes survival harder, that is for sure. Also, I believe the damage scale is overdone, and the the Endermen don't have the correct damage value.
Build Space. I believe there is plenty of build space. Forests, deserts and flat biomes vastly outnumber the mountainous terrain. However the mountains will make it far harder to traverse the land.
Resources. Hard to say, I believe it will be harder to harvest materials en mass. I think mines around diamond level will be largely unaffected. Also, it would seem to me that the abandon mines seem to have some very valuable loot chests (can get diamonds). I'm sure we can work around it and work out new mining techniques.
Re:
Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
, Sat Sep 10 2011, 05:33PM
i'm getting alot of situations like this too. arid desert, no trees or resources, right next to mountain areas that would be difficult to build on
Re:
Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
, Sat Sep 10 2011, 05:36PM
although i've got to admit, it does look pretty
the caves cut into the land would be great to hide in too
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
Aconan, Sat Sep 10 2011, 05:40PM
As long as the spawn is in a forest biome it will be fine.
Edit. gah, getting 2000+ chunk updates XD...
Re:
Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
, Sat Sep 10 2011, 05:43PM
that's just it, forest biomes are rare on my seed lol. and never seem to occur on mountainous regions either.
still, you only need a few saplings to cure that issue. would be a nice trade for wood
Re:
Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!

errr just as i replied about the forests, i flew over this

Excavating, like a BOSS!
notice the lack of resources though :/
Re:
Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
Aconan, Sat Sep 10 2011, 07:17PM
Ok, I decided to see where the sea starts, and it pretty much starts at -3000,3000. So About 3k blocks out on my map.
This is in the middle of the map on Map_6. 0,0 or spawn is from the North East. Anyway, this should give you a rough idea of the change from mainland to sea area.
+ nice large swamp area.
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!
Squippit, Sat Sep 10 2011, 07:48PM
As much as I love this 1.8 pre-release, I'm now very sad. It occurred to me AFTER I put the 1.8 on I probably should've backed up 1.7.3. So... Now I'm stuck in offline mode and I miss CFUK... V.V Should I just wipe this version and everything I've started on and download a fresh 1.7.3? Perhaps so... Anywho-I love the ravines and the thought of living on a small cluster of islands thousands of blocks away from a civilization. I'm also digging the shears. They can pick up everything now ^^ Vines, tall grass, sheep wool. And I'm pretty sure they can get dead shrubs from desert biomes. Also, I got lucky I think with a ravine and a swamp biome for my seed. I used my username.
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!

minecraft savesavesave is 1.7 and minecraft onepoint8 is my 1.8.

First thing I did on 1.8 was to look directly at the endermen.
I actually got into a fist fight with one - and I won! Till a skeleton came and killed me..Then I lured the other into the water.
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!

Apparently only one stronghold spawns per server. Since it would be kind of unfair for a single person to own it, maybe the community could renovate it and build a city of sorts?

Yeah. That would be pretty cool if the stronghold was part of the spawn town.
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!

I keep getting a very strange duplication glitch.
if you leave something in the workbench when you exit the crafting screen, what gets dropped on the floor is an infite block, if you pick it up and hold it with your mouse and right click you get endless supply of whatever it is.
interestingly doing this with a minecart fills your inventory with minecarts.
very weird lol
Re: Minecraft 1.8 PRE RELEASE!!!

Yeah there was an interesting iron block dupe bug as well
Re:

well, i'm doing alright
i've been avoiding the dupe bugs and discarding the accidental duped items.
play on hard skill too which got quite challenging at one point.
in the house cellar is a wheat farm. and i've been rounding up the sheep and cows, while slaughtering the chickens and pigs. So i'm pretty self sufficient now
found a load of iron beneath my house and haven't come across any caverns yet (thank god). i've now down to layer 10 so the diamond hunt can begin

Awesome
I decided to take an extended flight around seed: -6892775256308385679
and mapped it out then joined it together to see what the overall pictures is that we can expect. This is 3 maps wide by 2 vertical. Spawn point or upper side of middle, just above the river in that huge desert.

oh, just for a sense of scale, this red square is your maximum viewing radius when set to far distance. so the biomes sizes are definitely as large as the eye can see in alot of cases

Somehow I don't think i'll be granted the "Free Range" application for these chooks
interestingly though, even with the rain and all those chickens my fps barely dropped below it's max of 60fps (limited as no point crunching it passed my monitors refresh rate) and ram usage hardly changed either. wonder if there's been some optimisation? would be great to have one of these somewhere for keeping everyone fed
