Beta 1.8 Release Date!

JOSHMOSS, Wed Aug 31 2011, 02:01PM

Earlier today Jeb posted this on his twitter:

"The plan right now is to release the "PAX version" of Minecraft ASAP, but there is some crucial work remaining. Sep 8th is a good guess"

Don't trust that Youtube channel its not an official one but a fan made thing. Never understand why people try to fake being an official channel.

Sep 8th is a guess, its not set in stone like that fake channel would have you believe.

- This is Mojang's Official Channel

The channel just shows a tweet from Jeb that says it's a guess. They didn't say it was definite.

The channel does claim its the date on there channel page, there is no mention of it as a guess there. Which is why its a good idea to tell people that its a fake channel. Nothing on it can be trusted.

The internet has a habit of twisting information all the time. Jeb says it's a guess, and if people want to interpret differently then they're the fools that will be disappointed.

As for MojangAB, they don't claim to be an official channel but a fan-base. The only people who don't realise this come under the category above.

Hey, don't use fool as an insult! We Crazy-Fools are not Fools!

Jighello
If you see a channel called MojangAB then you assume by default that its official given its the company name of Mojang AB(Until you realise its fake, or unless you know TeamMojang is the official one). From what i can tell calling something a fanbase doesn't mean its un-official by default(Mojang could start up there own "Fanbase" channel featuring fan's stuff if they wanted to).

The whole point im trying to make is that people shouldn't quote/rely/link to fake channels but instead quote/rely/link to official stuff.

Unfortunately, you can't post a URL to a single twitter message, you have to post a link to the person's profile, and then make people search for the twitter post you were describing. Twitter has its fair share of usability quirks.

In any case, the twitter post shown is verbatim what Jeb_ said on twitter. And its also what Notch has said in interviews during PAX and just after. They intend to split the 1.8 release into two parts, one just cleaning up the code they had at PAX, and 1.9 having the rest of the adventure update pieces in there (experience, more mobs, bosses, NPC villagers/smiths, etc.). The first part, 1.8, should be in a "week or two" after PAX (which was last week).

Bad news for those that like to build mob traps though.... Jeb_ said that in the future the mob traps *could* be rendered useless. Right now they are thinking that you should only get loot drops and experience orbs if the player actively kills the mob/animal, not if the mob/animal dies from falling or fire or suffocation, etc.

Here is the twitter conversation:
-----------------
tinfoilchef
does the hunger thing affect people sitting afk for hours while something grows or a mob tower produces stuff?
-----------------
@jeb_
No, the food meter is only affected by activity
-----------------
@jeb_
... although we may make grinders obsolete in the future. For instance, exp orbs are only dropped if a player did the killing
-----------------
@tinfoilchef
That's ok, if I'm using a mob grinder I want the drops more than the exp orbs
-----------------
@jeb_
Yeah but that was what I was hinting at... We haven't changed it yet, but we may make drops work the same way as orbs
-----------------
@tinfoilchef
that'd be a bummer.. no more legitimate ways to get thousands of TNT for a big project. that'd suck
-----------------
@jeb_
Unless you play creative mode
-----------------

I don't think this will go over too well with the long-time players, though... so there is a chance a nerd uproar could get them to change their minds. Didn't work with cart boosters, though :/
Re: Beta 1.8 Release Date!

Also, more bad news.... the map height limit is not "adjustable" as first mentioned by Notch a few weeks ago. All he did was make it "easier for mods to change the map height". And that means, that there will likely be no higher maps possible unless both server and client are running the same mod. And forcing clients to have mods in order to play on the server is something Broonie will not do.

When Notch first discussed the map height change, saying it was adjustable from 128 to 512, no mention of needing a mod to do it was made. I think that he had tried to implement it in vanilla and just couldn't. So, he has backtracked. He has a two part interview (from PAX) here, where he blames performance and stability issues as the reason:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KavmNrLtdso

edit: for those of you that want to jump straight there... the question about map height is in the second link, at the 1:30 mark.

"Minecraftblock0"

People have been posting links to individual twitter posts since the beginning of time. You just need to click on the bit that displays the time since it was posted(Bit that sais "16 minutes ago").

They do but notch will come up with a new food stuff to implement and the deadline gets pushed back. Hamburgers in 1.8, yum.

so new map 1.8 .. then 1.9 comes .. if we want the new stuff again there we 1) enjoy dodgy chunk boundaries? 2) new new map for 1.9?

or am I understanding it wrong?
Re: Beta 1.8 Release Date!
Jighello, Thu Sep 08 2011, 07:48PM

I think all the terrain generation additions are in 1.8. So, unless any surprises pop up, 1.9 shouldn't require a new map.

Edit: I just read the post. Derp.

Edit Deux: Perhaps a short border for 1.8, which can then be extended come 1.9?
Re: Beta 1.8 Release Date!
, Thu Sep 08 2011, 08:10PM

well while talking with broonie and kahr the other day it went down to a 6000x6000 (-3k to +3k) map (from 5000x5000) with the intention to expand to 12000x12000 at 1.9.
After looking at how much free space we have on the current map from over 6 months of play it's clear we don't need 20000x20000 really.
Just a bit of a whine that we will get a dodgy 1.8to1.9 region. cheesey guess we could class it as a special extra biome smile
Re: Beta 1.8 Release Date!
dubien, Thu Sep 08 2011, 09:08PM

So you're saying that there will be less space in the next map? Bad idea considering oceans will make up most of the surface in 1.8. There would still probably be enough space, but the oceans should be considered.
Re: Beta 1.8 Release Date!
, Fri Sep 09 2011, 07:10AM

Oceans will be a good thing, Hopefully people will think more about what and where they build.

One thing that really annoyed me in our current map was I'd build a jetty to a large part of water and over the weeks every available bit of it would be filled with a new build or links to larger seas would be cut of by badly built bridges and roads.

Old boat spawn used to be an island which you could navigate round completely, its impossible now. Same happened with new spawn I built a huge boat house on my coastal town hoping to enjoy sailing back and forth between spawn and eventually Oasis popped up taking up the whole sea and cutting off a further part from me, I don't have a problem with Oasis it's an amazing build but I was annoyed for a bit.

I welcome the new map size however I think there should be rules about sea, no sea bridges that cut over large expanses of water, use a bloody boat or build the bridge high enough to allow boat travel underneith. /rant
Re: Beta 1.8 Release Date!
beagrie, Fri Sep 09 2011, 08:34AM

No sea bridges, OK, but what about if I drained a large area of sea?
Re: Beta 1.8 Release Date!
Jighello, Fri Sep 09 2011, 08:58AM

Waterbodies close to Spawn are expected to get built on/over. If you want an ocean to yourself travel a bit further out - there are hundreds!
Re: Beta 1.8 Release Date!
, Fri Sep 09 2011, 09:26AM

Ha, I don't want to be a sea nazi, I just think it's a question of aesthetics we have the new spawn and it's western themed anybody who built a glass tower with lava running down the side would soon find themselves having to rebuild it or face a ban. I just think we should have a similar rule for sea I'm not apposed to sea builds just ones that cut of navigation, I'm the kind of player who likes to work with the land (usually) The idea of sailing a sea and eventually up an estuary to a river into a huge land mass is really cool but someone cutting that all off with build is really obnoxious.

The first thing I did when I joined was build an island fortress surrounded by sea, but ultimatly it's boring and a bit lonely, I like to see builds and docks running along the coast as I sail by.
Re: Beta 1.8 Release Date!
, Fri Sep 09 2011, 08:12PM

I Agree with Mysterysteve_UK. As soon as a walkway is put over water (Even if you make it out to the middle of the sea where you make a build from scratch from the sea bed to the surface) loads of rubbish builds pop up branching off that walkway with the "glass tower with lava running down the side" type of rubbish.

I have no problem personally with people filling up the sea. As long as its not loads of pointless rubbish to clutter up the place.

Note: I don't mind lava and glass towers, as long as its done in a decent artistic way. Near the current spawn is a lava tree thing that is done decently.
Re: Beta 1.8 Release Date!
Jighello, Fri Sep 09 2011, 09:01PM

We have a rule to prevent stupid builds, not ugly ones. Everyone can't like the same things, unfortunately - the reason I'm in the middle of nowhere. wink

Anyway, getting a bit off-topic here...
